WHAT DOES YOUR SCHOOL NURSE DO?
The National Association of School Nurses defines school nursing as:
A specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic success, and life-long achievement of students. To that end, school nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and, actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning.
Parent Notification of SB66:
The purpose of this notification is to inform parents/guardians that in accordance with Chapter 38, Subchapter E of the Texas Education Code, the Board of Mesquite Independent School District has adopted a policy to allow authorized and trained personnel to administer an epinephrine auto-injector to a person who is reasonably believed to be experiencing an anaphylactic reaction on a school campus. This program goes into effect the week of February 13, 2017.
Each school nurse office will be supplied with stock epinephrine auto-injectors and standing orders from an advising physician to be used for cases of suspected anaphylaxis in persons with no history of anaphylaxis. Mesquite ISD will ensure that a sufficient number of school personnel at each campus are trained to administer epinephrine so that at least one trained individual is present while the campus is open. A campus is considered ‘open’ beginning with the first hour of instruction through the last hour of instruction. Mylan will fund the program through Epipen4schools. If funding from an outside source ceases, the implementation of Stock Epinephrine Auto-Injectors will be re-evaluated by Mesquite ISD.
Each high school athletic trainer will be supplied with stock epinephrine auto-injectors and standing orders from an advising physician to be used for cases of suspected anaphylaxis in persons with no history of anaphylaxis at athletic events where an athletic trainer is present.
Parents of students with known life-threatening anaphylaxis should continue to provide the school with all necessary medication for implementing the student specific order on an annual basis. The Epipen4schools program is not intended to replace student-specific orders or parent provided individual medication.
DCHHS Offering Children's Flu Vaccine
DALLAS (Sept. 8, 2016) – Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) is offering the seasonal flu vaccine at 2377 North Stemmons Freeway for children eligible for Texas Vaccines for Children (TVFC). The cost is $10 for new patients and $5 for returning patients.
Dallas County residents from birth to age 18 in the following categories are eligible to receive the flu vaccine from DCHHS under the TVFC program:
immunizations are covered.
“Parents should not wait to get their children vaccinated for the flu,” said Zachary Thompson, DCHHS director. “The flu shot is the best form of prevention against the flu.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the flu vaccine for almost everyone except children younger than 6 months of age. The flu vaccine DCHHS provides is an all-in one shot that protects against multiple flu strains including the H1N1 virus.
“We’re encouraging everyone to get the flu shot as soon as possible because it takes about two weeks for the body to develop the antibodies needed to provide protection,” said Dr. Christopher Perkins, DCHHS medical director/health authority. “Additionally, we urge everyone to practice flu prevention recommendations which will help prevent spreading the virus.”
Those recommendations include cough and sneeze etiquette along with proper hand-washing. DCHHS has flu prevention materials on its website available for the public to download.
The children’s flu vaccine is available at DCHHS 2377 N Stemmons Freeway, in Dallas, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information call 214-819-2163.
